RING CARBINE. Cal. 45-70. Over 112,000 Peabody rifles and carbines were produced from 1866-71. They were made for numerous state and foreign contracts during that period. This example is fitted with a 20" bbl with iron block mounted blade front sight. 2-leaf carbine rear sight, & "CROWN/V" proof. The same proof is marked on the top of the frame. The left side of the frame has the standard 5-line address. A partial oval "WC" is found on the left wrist. CONDITION: Overall fair. The metal surfaces have been lightly cleaned with a dark patina and bluing remaining on the bbl in the most protected of areas. The stock has a replacement forearm and a plug in the sling swivel location on the butt. There are numerous handling marks and scratches present. Missing internal spring top keep the breech closed. Frosted bore with good rifling and spots of pitting. PROVENANCE: Military Museum Collection of Shooters Outpost, Hooksett NH. (01-29582/ZAL) ANTIQUE $800-1200.
